Create Your Own Adventure at Playa Viva

I love this photograph. It says everything about what Playa Viva is all about.  The person in the photo is a guest, Peter. He spent a week in Playa Viva with a large group of friends and this particular day he spent the day with the local fishermen.  In this image he is obviously tossing out a net, fishing, but he also spent a few hours spear fishing with the father of one of our team members.

So many guests contact us before coming and want to know, “What are the Activities?”. While we have a book full of excursions and activities that you can enjoy while at Playa Viva, it is moments like this that you can’t put in a book, these are the interactions that come from getting to know our team, exploring what the environment has to offer and making yourself open for the adventure. Come to Playa Viva and create your own Adventure.

For a video done by a member of this group follow this link. The video covers both the turtle sanctuary and the team.

  1. I love this photo too, especially since I am the subject. Since I am an avid fly fisherman, I was drawn to the local fisherman and their low tech approach to fishing. It was actually Johnny, our full service bar tender at Playa Viva, who showed me how to cast the nets. It’s not as easy as the locals make it look, but then I saw a few father/son teams together, so it must be almost instinctual for them. Johnny also shared with me his “rod”, which consisted of a 10″ piece of bamboo with a line, lead weight and a hook. You “cast” the baited hook like a lariat, swinging it overhead until you throw it into the surf. The ultimate experience was spear fishing beyond the surf line with another local, who does it for a living. He graciously accepted the challenge of teaching a neophyte gringo how to skin dive for big fish with a spear gun. We negotiated the lesson while we bought our still-flopping-fresh dinner from him on the beach. I will remember this precious experiences for a lifetime.

  2. Peter was, indeed, casting his net wide at Playa VIva–to embrace a vacation full of fun, purpose, and his own organically derived adventures.
